Yolanda was born in 1916, in Canaan, New York, the 2nd of three children. Her natural parents died about the time she was four. The 3 youngsters were adopted by a very loving uncle and strict aunt and were reared in Detroit, Michigan. Yolanda graduated from Hazel Park High School, a suburb of Detroit around 1934. In the heart of Motown, she worked in the catering office at the prestigious Wardell Hotel. This is where she met and dated a handsome cook named Albert Guzman. They wed in El Paso, Texas, in 1945, while Albert was enlisted in the United States Army, during World War II and later was honorably discharged in 1946. Two children later arrived: Albert, Jr. and Barbara. The family moved from Detroit to Stockton, California, in March of 1952, and then moved again in 1955 to Westchester, a suburb of Los Angeles. The family lived in Westchester until LAX purchased their home (and the neighborhood) for airport expansion around 1968. Albert, Sr. worked hard as a chef at Lawry’s Prime Rib, United Airlines and also as a small business owner. Yolanda worked part-time for the Los Angeles Unified School District as a cafeteria worker, working at Westchester Elementary School and Airport Jr. High School. She stayed at home most of the time: guiding, entertaining and loving the children. During the mid 70’s and early 80’s, Yolanda babysat her two grandchildren Tony and Chris, who cherish every moment they shared together. When Albert, Sr. died in 1981, she joined several clubs as she was quite social. She became a life member of the Woman’s Auxilary of the VFW, Post 1622 in Lomita. Yolanda is survived by daughter Barbara Graham, son Albert Jr., grandchildren Tony Graham, Chris Graham, Jesse Guzman, Marielle Guzman, and great grandchildren, Anthony Graham, and Samantha Graham. A viewing will be held on Thursday February 17, 2011 at A.M. Gamby Funeral Home in Lomita, CA between 4-8pm with a Rosary to start at 7pm. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday February 18, 2011 at St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church in Redondo Beach, CA at 10am.
