It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our dear daughter and sister, Patricia Berry, who went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Patty will be fondly remembered for her razor sharp wit, ferocious intelligence and blazing passion for all things theatrical. She consumed books and could tell a story with just the right mix of truth, hyperbole and drama. In life, she kept the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi close to her heart, knowing that ìIt is in dying that we are born to eternal life.î She is, without a doubt, now with our Lord and at peace. She was the daughter of Charles and Martha Berry, born September 30, 1953 in Havana, Cuba. Patty graduated from South Torrance High School in 1971, going on to receive her B.A. from the University of Redlands and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Washington. She received her J.D. in 1990 from the University of Southern California. At USC, Ms. Berry was a member of the University of Southern California Law Review and graduated Order of the Coif. She practiced employment law at Young, Zinn & Bate in Los Angeles, California. Patty is survived by her mother, Martha Berry; her sisters, Eileen (Berry) Stevens and Dianne (Berry) Reyes; her nieces and nephews, Adriana (Reyes) Suyama, Sarah Stevens, Eric Stevens, Christine Reyes and Jesse Reyes; and her great-nieces and nephew, Jayden, Eli and IslaLou Suyama, whom she adored. Memorial services will be held May 3, 2014, 3:00 pm at St. Markís Presbyterian Church, 24027 Pennsylvania Ave., Lomita, CA 90717.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be sent to The Patricia M. Berry Memorial Scholarship, created by the partners at Patriciaís law firm. Contributions can be sent to the attention of Lorri Grubaugh, Director of Development, USC Gould School of Law, 1149 S. Hill Street, Ste. 340, Los Angeles, CA 90015-2220; (213) 821-3565. Checks should be made payable to USC with the notation ìIn memory of Patricia M. Berryî on the memo line.
