Merrill Bickmore passed away peacefully on December 21, 2010. He was born Sept 9, 1922, in Corrine, Utah, to William McArthur and Ida Luella Bickmore. Merrill was the youngest of 7 children: Genevieve Bickmore Gardner Sessions, William Kenneth, Aleda, Luel la Bickmore Koford, David, and James Grant. They lived in Downey, Idaho throughout Merrill’s schooling years. Merrill entered the U.S. Marine Corp on Sept 16, 1942. He served in New Zealand, Guatalcanal, Bouganville, and Guam, where he was wounded Aug 8, 1944. This was how he met and married the love of his life—his cute Navy nurse Frances George from Heuvelton, N.Y. Merrill enjoyed telling people that he loved Fran more than Adam loved Eve because he gave up TWO ribs & a lung and Adam only gave one rib! They were married 63 years before his “Frannie Babe” passed away. Merrill worked for J.C. Penney Co., in various locations and positions, was Treasurer/General Manager of Broadbent Laboratories, worked for Intercontinental Transport as Executive Vice President and later President. He then became self-employed starting his own business consulting as a personal property broker, and doing investment management. Throughout his career he developed his abilities and skills as a great “people person.” He often spent time counseling with individuals, helping them to improve their work ethics and professional skills. Merrill was a wonderful example of a loving, devoted husband and father. Merrill was very involved in the community. He served as a member of the National Defense & Transportation Association, Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Riviera Hospital Board of Directors and the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce. He was a very devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving as Bishop of Palos Verdes Ward, then as Stake President of both Torrance and Palos Verdes Stakes. When the Stake was divided, he became the first President of the Palos Verdes Stake. Following his release, he was called to serve as the Stake Patriarch and as a sealer in the Los Angeles Temple. He is survived by his children: son Victor Bickmore of Santa Barbara, CA; daughters, Terry Bickmore Parson (Mike) of Temple City, CA; Cindy Bickmore Grant Segawa (Chris) of Lomita, CA; Jenny Bickmore Webster (Charlie) of Torrance, CA; Melinda Bickmore Wing (Phil) of San Diego, CA; grandchildren: Chloe Bickmore, Cooper Bickmore, Benjamin Parson (Traci), Kimberly Parson Houldridge (John), Christopher Parson (Sarah), Matthew Parson (Amy), Tamela Parson Deim (Jordan), Michael Parson II, Holley Grant Mullen (Shawn), James Grant (Shannon), Katherine Grant King (Justin), Merrill Grant, Blake Webster (Brittany), William Webster, Victor Webster, Grant Webster, Emma Webster, Whitney Wing, and Kimball & Steven Wing; with an additional 25+ great grandchildren. His services will be on Saturday, January 8, 2011, with the viewing at 10 a.m. followed by the Funeral at 11 a.m. at the Palos Verdes Stake Center, 5845 Crestridge Road, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. Interment to follow at Green Hills Cemetery.
