The Life of a Rose Mattie Griffin Mattie was born to the proud parents of Edward and Eva Rutherford, October 12, 1915, in Oklahoma City, OK. Mattie was the first of four children born to this union. At an early age she accepted Christ. Mattie received her formal education in the Oklahoma City school system. Upon completion of high school she attended Langston College in Oklahoma City where she studied Accounting and Bookkeeping. Mattie married Lonnie Griffin and started a family. The first of six children was her daughter Carleena , followed by their son Alonzo while still in Oklahoma City. Before leaving Oklahoma City, Mattie worked as a secretary for her father-in law who was a judge. Her family then moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1951 where they purchased their one and only home and then the family continued to grow with four more children, Charles; Ella; Darryl and Denise. She was a homemaker for years taking care of the family until the late 1960’s when she decided to work for Hertz Mountain as a bookkeeper. Mattie was also a hairstylist and a person that loved to sew and make her own clothes. Mattie retired from Hertz Mountain after twelve years to help care for her first grandchild and every year after that she was blessed with another grandchild to care for. She dedicated all of her time to taking care of her children and then her grandchildren. Mattie loved watching her Christian programs, and listening to Christian music. She loved watching sports and in her earlier years with her husband Lonnie, they would go to baseball games. She also loved basketball, a big Lakers fan. Everyday Marie and her mother would talk from 7:00 P.M. to 7:30 P. M. while Marie and her husband were commuting home. Her husband, Gregory, would ask her about her day and if she was watching the basketball game. Sometimes we could hear her screaming at Kobe if he missed a basket. Mattie loved working in her garden. She grew her own vegetables. She also had a beautiful rose garden in the front yard. Her neighbors would always stop and talk to her about her roses and ask for some of her cuttings. She had a green thumb, could grow just about anything except for a solid white rose. She tried for years but was unsuccessful and on that special day that the Lord called her home her grandson Delvon had a solid white rose that bloomed in his front yard that she bought for him. On May 24, 2010 in the seven o’clock hour, Marie entered into the room at the hospital where her two brothers and her two nieces were waiting. She knew that God was calling her mother. Marie let her mother know that if it is God’s will, she must let her go. When she kissed her mother on the forehead and told her how much she loved her, within ten minutes, God took her mother’s hand. Marie knew not to ask God why because Mattie would always say never to question God’s work. God knows what he is doing and that he makes no mistakes. She was preceded in death by: Lonnie Griffin (husband), Carleena Holmes (daughter), Alonzo Griffin (son), Edward Rutherford, Jr., (brother), Lavonne Rutherford (sister). She leaves to cherish her wonderful life: her sister Evelyn Knight, her two sons, Charles Griffin, Sr. and Darryl Griffin, Sr. (Veronica), her two daughters Marie Williams (Gregory) and Denise Griffin, eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. MOTHER, MAY YOU REST IN PEACE, YOUR LOVE, TEACHINGS AND MEMORIES WILL LIVE FOR EVER IN OUR HEARTS. Grandchildren: Delvon Levingston (Noelle), Sheila Holmes , Denitra Marcus (Wayne), Shaun Motley, Charles Griffin, Jr., Jasmine Quinones (Jason), Sharonda Griffin, Glory Griffin, Darryl Griffin, Jr., Deondre Levingston, and Latierja Griffin.
