Marjorie Louise Newman Rogers, 87, of Torrance, CA, passed away Sept 23, 2014 at her home, surrounded by loved ones.

Marjorie was born on July 21, 1927 in Henefer, Utah, the oldest child of Lawrence and Ferol Newman. She attended Ogden High School in Utah and graduated in 1945. She married Bernell Rogers March 15, 1947 in Elko, Nevada. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this year.

She was a wonderful and devoted mother to six children. She worked at Hill Air Force Base while Bernell completed his university studies in electrical engineering at the University of Utah. The family moved from Salt Lake City to Torrance, CA in July, 1954 to allow Bernell to start his career in the aerospace industry.

As the children grew older, Marjorie became an employee of the City of Los Angeles. She was a clerical worker at the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Department and the Hyperion Department in El Segundo. She retired after 25 years of distinguished service.

Marjorie was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints and served faithfully in many callings. Using her love and talent in music she directed the choir, sang beautiful solos, and conducted the hymns during Sacrament Meeting for 33 years. She also loved to teach the children in Primary, a calling she held for 10 years.

She loved family outings. Her family was the center of her life. She was an outstanding cook and homemaker. The family took camping trips through all the western states, especially national parks and historical monuments. She never forgot a birthday of any of her children or grandchildren.

Marjorie loved music and learned to play the piano and violin in her youth. As an adult she became an accomplished soprano. She made music lessons a priority for all of her children and instilled in them a lifelong love for music. She was an avid reader and loved crossword puzzles.

In the final years of her life, she bravely battled debilitating health challenges. Despite these challenges, she never lost her sense of humor, kindness or dignity.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, 3 sisters, and 1 grandson.

She is survived by her husband Bernell D. Rogers, sister Diane Burns of Pleasant View, UT, her six children, Mark (Debbie) Rogers of So. Ogden, UT, Pamela (Chuck) Brantingham of Carpenteria, CA, Julie (Wayne) Tuttle of Torrance, CA, Marsha (Craig) Hamilton of Palmdale, CA, Cheryl (Peter) Holzer of Fallbrook, CA, and Brent (Cyndee) Rogers of Lakewood, CA. Marjorie is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 29, 2014 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 22605 Kent Ave. Torrance, CA 90503. There will be a viewing at 10:00 AM followed by the funeral at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Green Hills Memorial Park.
