Leland Benjamin McConnell (Mac) (Uncle Peter). February 21, 1918 – July 18, 2011. Mac, a 59 year Lomita resident, passed away peacefully Monday, July 18, 2011 surrounded by his family at age 93. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Geraldine Marion, and is survived by his daughter Mary Fisher, son-in-law Steven, three grandchildren, Christopher Conklin (Karin), Brooke Fisher-Hayes (Mike), Brittany Fisher, and two great-grandchildren Mackenna and Westin Conklin. He was Uncle Peter to his many nieces and nephews. Mac was born on Grindstone Island in upstate New York where he lived with his 15 brothers and sisters until he joined the US Navy in 1940. He served on the USS Denabola, USS Bollinger and his favorite ship, the USS Yorktown. During 1943 and 1944 while on the carrier USS Yorktown he participated in many Asiatic Pacific campaigns. In 1942 he married Geraldine Marion and after his discharge in 1946 they moved to San Pedro. He was employed by the US Borax Company for 35 years. Mac enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, watching his favorite baseball team, the Angels, and breakfast on Sunday at the Lomita VFW Post. Mostly, he enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
