Kenneth LeRoy Davis, 88, passed away on August 21, 2015 peacefully at his Torrance, CA home with family by his side. He was born January 26, 1927 in Ottumwa, Iowa. He is survived by daughters, Ann Davis-Schultz of Redlands, CA and Denise Dillard of St. George, UT. Grandchildren include Bethany Weeks, Emily McConnell, Darren and Deanna Dillard. Great grandchild is Kalel Weeks. Other family members include: sister-in-law, Sue Ann Harding; niece, Linda Cochrane and her husband, Mike Cochrane and their two children, Amy and Tom Cochrane; brother-in-law, William ìBillî Cox and his wife, Cheryl Cox and their daughter, Lynne Marie; and son-in-laws, Robert Schultz and David Dillard. He was preceded in death by his wife Colleen, father Roy Davis, mother Gladys Davis, brothers Darrel and Loyal Davis, mother-in-law Mildred Adams, father-in-law Howard Cox, and brother-in-law Kent Harding.
Ken grew up in Ottumwa and graduated from Ottumwa High School. While in his senior year of high school, he joined the Navy to fight in World War II. He served aboard a destroyer and was a specialist in using Morse code. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Ottumwa and earned his high school diploma. He later married his high school sweetheart, Colleen Yvonne Cox after she moved to California with her family. They enjoyed a life together with Christ at the center of their marriage. They raised their family of two daughters and two dogs (Bootsie and Heidi) and later in life enjoyed several trips together to the Holy Land, Europe, and Alaska before Colleen passed away in 1999 of complications related to early onset Alzheimerís disease.
He began his vocation with the Los Angeles County Fire Department working his way up from Fire Fighter, to Engineer, and then Captain. He obtained his Associate in Arts degree in Fire Science from Los Angeles Harbor College.
Ken had lived by himself for the last 16 years in Torrance, CA and only required the help of 24 hour in-home care beginning in late 2014. He enjoyed a special bond with his care provider, Oscar. Ken enjoyed going to car shows and appreciated the opportunity to own a variety of cars in his lifetime (ranging from a Triumph TR3, Plymouth Barracuda to his last vehicle, a Lincoln Town Car). He was an avid football fan. He enjoyed special time with his family during holiday and birthday celebrations. He enjoyed doing home improvements and also visiting construction sites with his family. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, family member, neighbor, and friend. Ken was faithful in his tithing to church and was a charitable giver. Funeral services will be conducted under the direction of A. M. Gamby Funeral Home in Lomita, CA on Friday, August 28, 2015 at 1:30 PM immediately followed by a graveside service at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.hide
