John P. Brennan 1966-2012 John Brennan, a South Bay native and familiar figure in local prep football circles has died. He parlayed twin passions for history and scholastic athletics into a self-created, successful career as a fundraiser and resource developer for parochial schools. He was 45- a month shy of his 46th birthday. John helped to build and successfully transform the football program at Serra High School in Gardena into one of national recognition. John assisted his brother-in-law and Serra head coach, Scott Altenberg in steering the Catholic school to its most successful football era in its 62-year history. It encompassed numerous league championships and culminating with unprecedented back-to-back State Football Championships in the process. John was able to positively influence numerous young student athletes and help to prepare them for a life beyond the football field. While coaching at Serra John, a voracious reader and history buff began connecting with some of the schools long-dormant alumni base. Impressed by John’s personable, unassuming style and his unique ability to genuinely connect with cross-generational alumni, school officials offered to make John’s passion project a permanent one. He then began his second career as the school’s Director of Alumni Relations and Development. John drew plaudits for reuniting various teams from both Serra and Bishop Montgomery at their respective schools including his own 1983 Bishop team. The youngest of four siblings, born to James (Milford, Connecticut), a long time aero engineer for Douglas Aircraft and Anita (Maui, Hawaii) a career educator with Carson High School. John Patrick Brennan was born April 26, 1966 and raised in Harbor City. He attended St. Philomena School and was fortunate to spend his summers in Hawaii. A 1984 graduate of Bishop Montgomery HS in Torrance, he was a football standout all four years. John began and elongated stretch in the airline industry, working for Continental, Northwest and Delta. Yet for all his lifelong association with athletics and affinity for various sports teams, it was clear that one team stood above others in his heart: His family. He made no secret to all who would listen that this family was what made him most proud. John, devoted husband and doting father, is survived by the love of his life, wife Kristin (Altenberg), daughter Chloe, 15 and son Kurt, 12, mother, Anita, sister Kathy, brother Joseph, and loving nephews and nieces: Jason, Ron, Gina and Kayla. Services for John Patrick Brennan begin Monday, April 9th with a viewing from 4 pm-8 pm at A. M. Gamby Funeral Home, with rosary at 7 pm. 25001 Narbonne Ave. Lomita. Funeral Mass takes place 10 am Tuesday, April 10th at St. Margaret Mary, 25511 Eshelman Ave., Lomita. Interment will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes.
