James Henry Ashley, age 72, of Compton, CA, made his transition on Friday, November 13, 2009 at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in Long Beach, CA due to an advanced blood disorder, which was first discovered several years ago. James was born and raised in Chicago, IL. He never forgot his Chicago roots but called California home for more than 50 years. James was the youngest child of Bertha and David Ashley Sr. (both deceased). A beloved brother to Edward Richardson (deceased), Bertha Ashley McCorkell (deceased), David Ashley Jr., Irene Ashley Hines and Lorraine Ashley Bell. A star athlete and graduate of Chicago’s Englewood High School, James went on to attend Wilson Junior College before entering the United States Marine Corps, where he served with honor and distinction. He was a caring and dedicated father to his children, a successful business owner and the founder of The Bertha and David Ashe Youth Empowerment Services Foundation. James bought his first real estate property in the 1960’s, and grew his business over the many years into the Ashe Management Group, a real estate and property management company. Additionally, James was an avid lover of dogs, which began at an early age in his life, and continued until his transition. At one time, James operated a dog obedience school over several years. James is survived by son Bruce Ashley, daughters Berchelle Ashley Cleveland and Bibi Ashley-Acosta, and grandchildren Candace Ashley, Corey Ashley, and Kirabo Ashe Acosta. He is fondly remembered by many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. A Memorial Service will be held in Chicago in February 2010. Call (773) 994-8246 for more information about the Memorial Service. James would have preferred that instead of flowers, donations be made to The Bertha and David Ashe Youth Empowerment Services Foundation, in c/o Berchelle Cleveland, P.O. Box 11601, Carson, CA.90749.
