Dewar, Douglas 1939-2010 Appropriately, Doug Dewar was born on Labor Day, September 6, 1939, in San Diego, CA. He passed away Friday, June 4, 2010 at the age of seventy after a ten year battle with cancer. He was the son of William and Rhea Dewar. Doug served four years in the Air Force as an airplane mechanic, and returned to earn an engineering degree from San Diego State College in 1966. He worked at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft for the first three years of his career and then joined Garrett-AirResearch for the remainder of his career. His long career with Garrett included development of jet engines, air conditioning systems for airplanes, tanks, and helicopters, and development of the gas centrifuge program. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marianne Dewar; his sons, Donald Dewar (Mimi) and Robert Dewar (Hyun Joo); two beautiful granddaughters, Joanna Dewar and Marianna Dewar, and his sister, Susan Martin of Hemel Hempsted, England. The one overriding interest in his life from the age of 16 was the Corvette. It was obviously love at first site and became an obsession as he bought, rebuilt, and restored classic Corvette’s and became a respected judge of them. He also loved to travel and was able to experience a good share of the world through the years. A memorial service for Doug will be held Thursday, June 10th at 2:00 p.m. at the Gamby Funeral Home at 25001 Narbonne Ave. Lomita, CA. A private burial will be held at the Veterans Cemetery in Riverside, CA.
