Charles (Chuck) Shelton Hohn Sr., 88, passed from this world on Saturday, June 26 in Torrance, CA, surrounded by his family and in the arms of his wife Lorraine. Chuck was born to Carl and Buford Poulson Hohn in Ethan, South Dakota on January 6, 1922. He moved to California in 1941 to find work in the aerospace industry to support the war effort. He married Lorraine G. Krzyzopolski of Aberdeen, SD in February 1942. They lived in Burbank and Gardena before settling in Torrance, where they raised their seven children. Chuck served in the U.S. Army during the war and was honorably discharged in 1946. He retired from aerospace after 33 years. Following retirement, Chuck and Lorraine traveled extensively in their motor home, visiting every state in the union, as well as Mexico and Canada. They also traveled to China, England, Ireland, and Hungary. Chuck was a craftsman who excelled at woodworking. He remodeled many houses, loved to camp and fish, and to spend time at the family cabin in Green Valley Lake. For many years, Chuck and Lorraine were avid square dancers with the Boots & Bows. Most of all, Chuck loved his family. He spent years researching and chronicling his family lineage, culminating in a published book. Chuck is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Lorraine; their children Margot (Norris) Rudon, Lake Forest; Ginger Hohn, Lomita; Charles (Sherry) Hohn Jr, Torrance; Eileen (William) Gilles, Glastonbury, CT; Jean (Lisa Rakow) Hohn, Loveland, CO; John (Margaret Peterson) Hohn, Santa Cruz; daughter-in-law Lorraine F. Hohn, San Diego;18 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; and his sisters Mary (Robert) Pierce and Virginia Miller. He was preceded in death by his son Michael Hohn of San Diego, his sister Marlys Bartlett, and his brother-in-law Glenn Miller. Chuck will be remembered for his devotion to family and friends, his passion for life and learning, and his gift for making all he met feel special. Visitation is at Gamby Funeral Home, 25001 Narbonne Ave., Lomita, from 4 to 8 pm on Friday, July 2. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 25511 Eshelman Ave., Lomita, at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 3. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Food Pantry at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, or to a charity of choice.
