Charles Joseph Axton Jr. known as Joe Axton to his family and friends was born on July 27, 1946, in Long Beach, California. Joe was the second son, and third child of Charles Joseph Axton, Sr. and Jessie Ellen Weirich Axton.

Joe was preceded in death by his Mother, Jessie, in 1985; His Step-Mother, Antoinette Dove Axton, in 1996; and his Father, Chuck, in 1998, his Brother, Joe, in 2002.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Cecelia Nims Axton; daughter, Amy Ellen Horne; son-in-law, Brian Christopher Horne; grandson, Connor Joseph Horne; son, Jonathan Allen Axton; sister, Mary Ellen Young, who resides in Cotati, California. Joe is also survived by his brother-in-law, Wes Nims; sister-in-laws, Marjorie Clowers, Nancy Howe, and Shirley Sauerhage; as well as a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Joe was raised in the Harbor City/Lomita California area. He attended St. Margaret Mary Parish School for 6 years; graduated from Narbonne Junior High School; was a graduate of Narbonne High School in 1964, with honors; and received a degree in business from Cal State University, Dominguez, CA in 1974.

Growing up, Joe was athletic, participating in little league; bowling; lettered in high school basketball, water skiing, and surfing.

When he was a teenager, his brother, Vern , who was an excellent, professional quality type golfer, taught him the game of golf. From that point on Joe became a lifelong avid golfer. Although Joe never quite achieved the natural talent for golf that Vern had, he never stopped enjoying golf with Vern, his Dad, his uncle Benny, and a host of golfing friends carrying a 7 handicap at the time of his death. Joe was obsessed with golf.

As a younger man, Joe also continued to bowl ofter carrying greater than a 200 average. He attended, along with his dad, Vern, his lifelong friends, Dick DeMott and Kip Randall, many California State Tournaments over the years. Joe regularly bowled at ì101 Bowling Alleyí on Pacific Coast Highway in Harbor City with his parents and friends.

Joe served in Vietnam, in the United States Navy from 1968 to 1970. He was assigned to the USS Dubuque. After serving he became a longshoreman and did that for 35 years.

Joe was a member of the Longshoremanís Union #ís 13 and 63. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 66 in Green Valley, Arizona. Joe was also a member of the USGA (United States Golfing Association). He was a member of the San Pedro Elks Lodge and the Green Valley Arizona Elks Lodge.

He moved to Arizona in 2006, and prior to that he lived in Temecula.

Services will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at A.M. Gamby Funeral Home,

25001 Narbonne Avenue, Lomita. Interment will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes.
